Mason residents can drop off unused or expired medications for free, anonymous disposal Saturday, Oct. 24, at the Kroger, 5100 Terra Firma Drive.
The Warren County Sheriff's Office, Mason Police Department and Warren County Drug Task Force are co-hosting the collection site as part of the Drug Enforcement Administration's National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. The Warren County Sheriff's Office announced the event on X on Oct. 20.
Both prescription and over-the-counter medications are accepted.
The DEA coordinates Take Back Day collection sites across the country. During the April 2026 event, 4,306 law enforcement agencies participated at 4,417 collection sites nationwide, according to the DEA. Those sites collected 642,410 pounds of medications. Since the program began, the DEA reports a cumulative total of more than 10,500 tons of drugs collected.
The agency's website frames the effort around a straightforward problem: unused prescription drugs left in medicine cabinets can end up in the wrong hands. The DEA called that outcome "dangerous and often tragic" in its program overview.
The Mason Kroger site is one of many collection points. Residents can search the DEA's Take Back Day site locator at dea.gov/takebackday for additional drop-off locations in Warren County and surrounding areas.
Specific hours for the Mason event have not been announced. Residents should check with the Warren County Sheriff's Office or Mason Police Department for timing details before heading out Saturday.
For those who cannot attend, many pharmacies and law enforcement offices maintain permanent medication drop-off boxes year-round. The DEA's site locator lists those options alongside Take Back Day events.
