Warren County Board of Commissioners President Shannon Jones, a Republican and former state senator, publicly condemned a Vivek Ramaswamy campaign ad and said she will not vote for the Republican gubernatorial candidate.
Jones called the ad "complete trash" in an Oct. 20 post on X and expanded on her criticism in an interview with Signal Cincinnati.
"It's despicable. It's outrageous, and I'm always going to stand up for victims and children," Jones told Signal Cincinnati.
Asked whether she would vote for Ramaswamy, she said she would not. "My children are watching me," she said.
The ad features Donna Arthur, the estranged mother of Democratic gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton, calling Acton a "liar" who should not be elected governor. The ad does not mention the backstory, according to Signal Cincinnati: Acton was removed from her mother's home in 1978 as a 12-year-old after her stepfather was charged with raping her.
Instead, Arthur accuses her daughter of lying about having lived in a tent as a child. Acton and her brother have described that experience publicly.
Jones is not alone among Ohio Republicans breaking with Ramaswamy over the ad. Gov. Mike DeWine, Sen. Jon Husted, Secretary of State Frank LaRose and former Attorney General Dave Yost have all distanced themselves from it, according to Signal Cincinnati.
DeWine called the ad "deeply, deeply troubling" and urged the Ramaswamy campaign to take it down, according to an Acton campaign press release compiling Republican criticism. Husted said he "would not have run that ad."
Not all Republicans agreed. Vice President JD Vance defended the ad during an appearance in Cincinnati on Oct. 21, telling fellow Republicans to "stop whining about an advertisement and go win the race," according to Signal Cincinnati.
Ramaswamy has said he plans to spend $4 million airing the ad on television before the Nov. 3 election.
Jones has served on the Warren County Board of Commissioners and was unanimously appointed board president at the Jan. 6 organizational meeting. She previously served a decade in the Ohio General Assembly.
Signal Cincinnati reported that Arthur did not respond to its interview requests. No public response from the Ramaswamy campaign specifically addressing Jones's criticism appeared in available records.
Early in-person voting in Ohio opened Oct. 24. The last day of early voting is Nov. 1, and Election Day is Nov. 3.
