Mason Intermediate ranks No. 109 among Ohio elementary schools

Mason Intermediate Elementary School placed No. 109 out of 1,019 ranked elementary schools in Ohio in the 2027 U.S. News Best Elementary Schools rankings, according to its U.S. News profile.

The school scored 89.39 out of 100 on the U.S. News scale. The U.S. News profile lists 3,086 students in grades 3–6 and reports 86% math proficiency and 85% reading proficiency on state assessments, outpacing both the Mason City Schools district averages of 84% in each subject and Ohio statewide averages of 49% in math and 55% in reading.

Mason Intermediate's math performance rated "well above expectations," and its reading performance rated "somewhat above expectations," according to U.S. News. The school has 152 full-time teachers, 99% of whom are certified, and a 20-to-1 student-teacher ratio.

These profile figures reflect earlier reporting periods. The school’s current website says Mason Intermediate serves approximately 1,600 students in grades 5–6.

Other local schools

Two Kings Local School District elementary schools in Kings Mills also earned rankings. Kings Mills Elementary School placed No. 185 with a score of 81.93 out of 100. Its 567 students in grades K-4 scored 87% proficient in math and 83% in reading.

J.F. Burns Elementary School ranked No. 263 with a score of 74.26 out of 100. Its 807 students posted 82% math proficiency and 78% reading proficiency.

Mason Early Childhood Center, which serves pre-K through second grade, was unranked because student performance data in math and reading was unavailable, according to its U.S. News profile.

How the rankings work

U.S. News ranked nearly 47,000 public elementary schools in its 2027 edition, using 2023-2024 state assessment data. The methodology weighted four factors equally at 25% each: math proficiency, math performance, reading proficiency and reading performance. Half the formula assessed raw scores. The other half factored in results relative to socioeconomic demographics.

Schools received scores on a 100-point scale relative to other schools in their state. Only public schools were included because they participate in common statewide assessments that allow direct comparison.
