The Kings Local School District board votes Tuesday, Sept. 15, on construction insurance for the new Kings High School. A Sharefax Credit Union partnership and 2027 spending authority are also on the meeting agenda.

Construction insurance and change orders

Treasurer Mike Morrow is set to present a builders risk insurance policy, which would cover the new high school during construction. No insurer, premium or coverage amount was listed.

The new Kings High School, managed by HGC Construction, is projected to serve 1,700 students and open during the 2027-2028 school year. Voters approved a $142 million bond issue to fund the project, as WLWT reported in February 2024, after the district reported overcrowding across its buildings.

The board has approved multiple HGC change orders this year, including one at its Aug. 18 meeting. Another change order and a Duke Energy invoice for the KHS Athletic Complex are also on the agenda. A City of Mason permit issued July 1 valued the new athletic fields campus at 5820 Columbia Road at $8 million. The project covers tennis courts, baseball and softball fields, a competition field, dugouts, press boxes, bleachers and parking.

Sharefax partnership

Superintendent Greg Sears is expected to present a proposed partnership with Sharefax Credit Union, a Southwest Ohio financial institution. The board would then vote on a formal partnership agreement. The agenda does not detail the scope of the arrangement.

Budget and other business

Morrow will also bring 2027 permanent appropriations and an amended certificate of estimated resources before the board. The district approved temporary appropriations for fiscal year 2027 at its June 9 meeting. Tuesday's vote would set the permanent spending authority.

Other items include updated 2027-2028 school calendars, a supplemental pay schedule for the Kings Education Association, enrollment numbers and the appointment of a delegate to the Ohio School Boards Association annual business meeting.

Board members John Skerl, Janelle Groff, Stacie Belfrom, Deb Cowan and Peggy Phillips meet at the Kings Education Center, 1797 King Ave., Kings Mills.
