U.S. Rep. Greg Landsman wants to send roughly $300 a month to working households across the Mason and Deerfield Township area.

The Democrat, who represents Ohio's 1st Congressional District including Warren County, introduced the Working Americans Affordability Tax Credit Act on Monday, Sept. 14, according to the Warren County Post. The bill would create a monthly refundable tax credit totaling up to $4,200 per year for every working tax filer earning less than $100,000.

To pay for it, the bill includes what Landsman calls the Billionaire Income Tax Act. That provision would require households worth more than $100 million to pay at least a 20 percent tax rate on their full income, including unrealized gains.

"If Trump were serious about helping folks, he would tell Congressional Republicans to support an effort like ours," Landsman said in a press release announcing the bill.

The legislation arrives amid a broader fight over direct payments to Americans. President Donald Trump pledged Sept. 9 at the GOP Midterm Convention in Dallas to send $5,000 "dividend" checks to every adult U.S. citizen if Republicans win the midterm elections. Two days later, Ohio U.S. Sen. Bernie Moreno pledged to draft legislation for those checks. The Dayton Daily News reported that Moreno's office declined to say how the estimated $1 trillion cost would be funded.

Landsman responded on X that same day, Sept. 11:

"They're literally trying to bribe the American people — while adding trillions to the debt…. So reckless. So corrupt. And such BS."

Three days later, he filed his own bill.

Landsman's proposal faces steep odds. Republicans control both chambers of Congress, and no cosponsors have been identified. No committee hearing or floor vote has been scheduled.

The $300-per-month figure comes from Landsman's own office. No independent cost analysis or Congressional Budget Office score has been published.

Landsman, who maintains a district office in Lebanon, faces Republican challenger Eric Conroy on the Nov. 3 ballot.
