Mason boys soccer scored three first-half goals and shut out Lakota West 3-0 in a Greater Miami Conference rivalry match Tuesday, Sept. 22.
The Comets built a 3-0 lead before halftime at home, according to live updates from Mason Sports Radio on X. Miller opened the scoring in the 11th minute, giving Mason an early 1-0 edge.
Kareem Mamlouk extended the lead in the 27th minute, converting a penalty kick for his first varsity goal. Hayashida then added a third off a free kick in the 37th minute, eight minutes before the halftime whistle.
The second half produced no goals. Mason's defense held the clean sheet through the final 40 minutes.
Mason's three goals came on three different types of finishes: open play, a penalty kick and a free kick. The student-run Mason Broadcasting Company streamed the match live on YouTube.
After the game, Mamlouk discussed his first varsity goal and how the team secured the win in a video interview with James Froelich of Mason Sports Radio posted to the outlet's X account after the match. No transcript of the interview was publicly available.
The 3-0 result adds to a long run of GMC success for the program. Mason has claimed 12 conference championships since joining the GMC in 2007, including seven in the past eight seasons through 2025, according to the MHS Chronicle.
That winning culture is something players have noticed. "It is not just some random program where I am playing soccer. It is building a family [and a] culture that likes to win and wants to win, which makes it so special," then-junior midfielder Eli Benne told the MHS Chronicle in October 2025 after the Comets clinched that season's title.
The Comets return to GMC play Oct. 1 with a road match at Lakota East. Mason then hosts Walnut Hills on Oct. 6 and Hamilton on Senior Night, Oct. 8.
