Mason residents can learn how to keep usable items out of landfills at a free recycling and donation workshop Wednesday, Sept. 30, at Sycamore Presbyterian Church, 11800 Mason Road.
The event runs from 1 to 2:30 p.m.
Titled "Where it Goes Matters: Responsible Donation & Recycling," the panel will feature representatives from three organizations: Junk King, Cincinnati Recycling & Reuse Hub and Rumpke Recycling. Each will discuss practical ways to donate and recycle items that often end up in the trash.
The topic grew out of the church's winter Mess Mender Series, where responsible donation and recycling emerged as a top concern among attendees, according to the church's Thrive Together page. The workshop is part of Sycamore Presbyterian's Thrive Together initiative, a series of free programs open to the congregation and the wider community.
What the panelists bring
Cincinnati Recycling & Reuse Hub, a nonprofit founded in 2021, accepts items that local curbside programs do not, including electronics, batteries, lightbulbs, styrofoam, flexible plastics, denim, eyeglasses and shoes. Some items are free to drop off, while others carry fees. The organization says it has diverted more than two million pounds of material from landfills and serves more than 50 area nonprofits. It also operates a retail thrift store called the Hub Shop.
Rumpke, the region's largest waste hauler, processed about 635,000 tons of recyclable material in 2024, achieving an 89.25% recovery rate, according to the company's sustainability page. The company operates one of the largest material recovery facilities in the nation in Cincinnati.
Junk King is a junk-removal franchise operating in Ohio.
How to attend
The workshop is free. Registration is open on the church's website.
Sycamore Presbyterian, which has more than 600 members, will follow the recycling workshop with its next Thrive Together offering: "Gifts of Imperfect Parenting," a six-week series led by facilitator Diane Kinsella running Wednesdays from Oct. 14 through Nov. 18, 7 to 8:30 p.m.
