Mason hosts No. 17 Oak Hills in ranked GMC showdown

No. 21 Mason hosts No. 17 Oak Hills at Dwire Field on Friday, Sept. 18, at 7 p.m. in a Greater Miami Conference game.

Both GMC teams have dropped their last two contests. WLWT's Blitz 5 Top 25 listed the matchup among its Week 5 best bets.

Fans who can't make it to Mason High School can watch the live stream on the WE_ARE_MBC YouTube channel. James Froelich, Mason Sports Radio's play-by-play voice, will call the action alongside an unannounced guest, according to a gameday post from Mason Sports Radio on X.

What's at stake

Mason opened the season ranked No. 16 in the Blitz 5 poll but has lost two straight since a 43-24 Week 2 win over Sycamore. No. 3 Lakota West beat the Comets 35-10 in Week 3.

Lakota East edged Mason 24-20 on Sept. 11 in Week 4, according to Dayton Daily News score reports. Mason scored on rushing touchdowns of 17 and 9 yards and field goals of 29 and 21 yards in the loss.

Oak Hills has followed a similar path. The Highlanders shut out Fairfield 21-0 in Week 2 but lost 31-28 to No. 8 Lakota East in Week 3 and fell 21-14 to Middletown on Sept. 11.

Players to watch

Oak Hills quarterback Lincoln Schreiber leads the Highlanders' offense. In the Week 3 loss to Lakota East, Schreiber threw for 271 yards and three touchdowns, including two in the fourth quarter, according to WLWT's Week 3 recap.

Receiver Cordel Ball caught seven passes for 149 yards and two scores in that game. Receiver Derion Kidd is another target in the passing attack.

Mason head coach Brian Castner is leaning on junior quarterback Alex Nagel, who threw only 20 passes all of 2025. In August, ahead of the season opener, Castner told Sports Illustrated that Nagel "makes up for it in toughness. He makes up for it in how smart he is."

Running back CJ Layton and receivers Chris Hubbard and Alec Cilley round out the Comets' skill positions. On defense, junior lineman AJ Kaylor recorded 11 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks last season.
