American Legion Joe Barr Post 194 has been a gathering place for Mason veterans and their families since 1944, and its reach extends well beyond the canteen.

The post supports youth sports programs, sends high school juniors to Buckeye Girls and Boys State, funds post-secondary scholarships and supplies items to veterans in VA facilities, according to a Mason & Deerfield Lifestyle profile published Oct. 27.

"Having a physical space where we can gather allows us to support one another," former Post Commander John Looker told the Lifestyle.

Post 194 operates under four branches: the main Legion, the Auxiliary, the Sons of the American Legion and the American Legion Riders. Together they run programs including TOPPS Soccer, Mason All-Stars Basketball and Challenger League Baseball, according to the Lifestyle profile.

The numbers back it up. The organization reported $290,864 in total revenue for the fiscal year ending June 2025, according to its federal tax filing on CauseIQ. Post Commander Patrick Strausbaugh and Executive Director Bob Johnson both serve without compensation.

Fundraising comes through annual Halloween parties, Super Bowl gatherings, Commander's Dinners and a monthly Sons of the American Legion breakfast open to the public. The Auxiliary holds a garage sale twice a year.

Marsha Giehls, president of Joe Barr American Legion Auxiliary Unit 194, told the Lifestyle that members volunteer to honor veterans' service and support one another through those events.

The post has a long-standing partnership with the City of Mason. The city dedicated the Mason Veterans Memorial on Nov. 8, 2003, with the late Neil Armstrong as guest of honor, according to the city's memorial page. More than 1,000 people attended, including at least 150 veterans. The memorial was rededicated on Veterans Day 2023, with Rick Armstrong, Neil's son, and U.S. Army veteran Shilo Harris serving as keynote speakers.

Mason also became a Purple Heart City, a designation the Lifestyle profile dates to 2020.

The city, Post 194 and VFW Post 9622 jointly offer programs honoring veterans and active military, including commemorative bricks and stones displayed at the memorial at 6000 Mason-Montgomery Road.

Each Veterans Day evening, the post holds a ceremony with a guest speaker at the Mason Municipal Building. The Auxiliary plans to participate in the 2026 program, though specific details for this year's ceremony have not been announced.

The post's website lists canteen hours Monday through Friday from 3 to 10 p.m., Saturdays from noon to midnight and Sundays from noon to 8 p.m. Residents can support the post by attending the monthly breakfast, donating items for veterans at VA facilities or inquiring about membership in the Legion, Auxiliary or Sons of the American Legion.
