Mason families looking for one more outdoor adventure before school routines take over can drop by Pine Hill Lakes Park on Saturday, Aug. 22, for a free Bamboo Fishing Derby hosted by Cub Scout Pack 323.
The pack will provide bamboo fishing poles, and no registration is required. The event runs during the afternoon at the park's two stocked fishing lakes, located at 211 Kings Mills Road.
City of Mason Recreation promoted the derby on Wednesday, Aug. 19, describing it as a free afternoon of fishing with bamboo poles provided by the pack.
Pine Hill Lakes Park's lakes are regularly stocked with catfish from April through August and trout in March and October, according to the city's fishing page. The city promotes catch-and-release fishing at the park.
On a typical day, anyone age 10 and older needs a fishing pass to cast a line at Pine Hill Lakes. Daily and seasonal passes are sold at the Mason Community Center, 6050 Mason-Montgomery Road, and online. Children under 10 always fish free. Whether the derby waives the pass requirement for older participants has not been confirmed.
Pack 323, which has about 20 active Cub Scouts, is no stranger to partnering with city facilities. In January, the pack visited the City of Mason Service Center for a hands-on lesson in snow and ice control, where scouts climbed into plow trucks and learned how city crews operate during winter storms.
The park is open dawn to dusk. Pack 323 has not announced a specific start or end time.
