Lee Sponseller is coming home.

Mason Comets Baseball announced Saturday, Aug. 15, that Sponseller, a 2013 Mason High School graduate and former Comets player, will serve as the program's associate head coach for the upcoming season. The hire brings collegiate coaching experience back to a program that won the OHSAA Division I state championship in 2024 and has reached the regional tournament six consecutive years.

The program said in its announcement on X that Sponseller brings coaching experience from the collegiate level as well as his time with the 2025 Mason Comets.

Sponseller is no stranger to the Mason dugout. He served as an assistant coach during the 2025 season, when the Comets finished 22-7. Before that, he built a resume across multiple college programs: a coaching role at Ohio Dominican University, a volunteer assistant position at the University of Cincinnati handling hitting and outfielders, and most recently a stint at Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville, where he oversaw the Trojans' offense and outfield prior to the 2026 season.

As a player, Sponseller suited up at both Ohio Dominican and Coastal Carolina University after graduating from Mason.

He joins head coach Curt Bly, who has led the varsity program since 2014 and guided the Comets to their 2024 state title. Bly has coached at Mason High School for 28 years. The 2026 squad finished 19-10 and reached the regional semifinals before falling to Oak Hills 11-5, according to Prep Baseball Report's tournament preview.

The announcement drew nearly 14,000 impressions on X within two days.

No specific date for the start of fall practices has been announced. The Comets Baseball program is also hosting its annual golf outing at The Grizzly Golf Course, though a date for the fundraiser has not been confirmed.
