The Mason Comets hit the road twice to open the 2026-27 athletic year, with football traveling to Springboro on Aug. 22 and boys soccer heading to Centerville on Aug. 23. Both games kick off at 7:15 p.m.
Mason Sports Radio, the student-run broadcast crew at Mason High School, announced the back-to-back openers on Sunday, Aug. 16, confirming both games as its first live broadcasts of the new school year. Both games will stream live through @MHSsportsradio on X.
Football: Comets at Springboro
Head coach Brian Castner's squad opens against Springboro in what marks the first competitive action for a program the Mason-Deerfield Times described as a "rebuilt squad" when we reported Aug. 15 on the Comets' Oct. 2 trip to Princeton's renovated $22 million stadium. The Springboro matchup gives Castner an early read on his roster before a Week 2 trip to Sycamore on Friday, Aug. 28.
Boys soccer: Defending GMC champs at Centerville
Coach Garrett Szabo's program enters the season carrying serious momentum. The Comets won the Greater Miami Conference title in 2025, their seventh in eight years and 12th overall since joining the conference in 2007. Mason went undefeated in regular-season play last fall, with only ties against St. Xavier and Sycamore.
"Our coach will point at the badge and the Mason logo and say it's a target on backs," midfielder Eli Benne, then a junior, told the MHS Chronicle in October 2025 during the team's championship run. "Everybody wants a piece, whether it is a normal game against Colerain or a big one against Sycamore."
That target-on-the-back mentality follows the Comets into Centerville for the opener.

Mason Sports Radio is entirely student-produced and managed, with high school students reporting on and promoting Mason athletes and coaches. The graphic announcing the two broadcasts was designed by student James Froelich.
Both games stream live at 7:15 p.m. through Mason Sports Radio's channels. The boys soccer schedule beyond the Centerville opener has not been confirmed.
