Mason's Police and Fire departments will lead three moments of silence on Friday, Sept. 11, at the City of Mason 9/11 Memorial, marking 25 years since the attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people.
The observances will take place at 8:46 a.m., 9:03 a.m. and 9:37 a.m., corresponding with the times each hijacked plane struck its target during the 2001 attacks. The first marks when Flight 11 hit the World Trade Center's North Tower, the second when Flight 175 struck the South Tower, and the third when Flight 77 hit the Pentagon.
The memorial sits inside the Mason Municipal Center at 6000 Mason Montgomery Road. It will be open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. that day for residents who want to visit on their own outside the organized observances.
The city announced the ceremony on its official social media accounts Wednesday, Aug. 19, inviting the community to honor and reflect on the milestone anniversary. The city's X account and Facebook page both posted details, and the city's website lists the times and location.
The format of the observance has not been detailed beyond the three scheduled silences. Residents are welcome.
Mason hosted a Memorial Day parade and ceremony in May, and its America 250 Committee has organized public readings of the Declaration of Independence this summer. The Sept. 11 observance continues that tradition of civic commemoration.
Nationally, the 9/11 Memorial & Museum in New York announced in May that a seventh moment of silence will be added to its annual ceremony, honoring the more than 9,000 people who have died from 9/11-related illnesses since the attacks.
