Mason residents can sign up now for a free, nine-week program that takes them inside both the police and fire departments for hands-on training and demonstrations.
The City of Mason announced on X on Tuesday, Aug. 18, that registration is open for the Citizen Safety Academy, which begins Wednesday, Sept. 2, at the Mason Municipal Center, 6000 Mason-Montgomery Road.
Sessions run every Wednesday from 6:30 to 9 p.m. through Nov. 4.
What participants will learn
The police portion covers patrol duties, crime scene processing, drug enforcement and traffic stops. The city's police academy webpage also lists firearms training, self-defense and public records as topics.
On the fire side, participants will get instruction in auto extrication, fire extinguisher use, CPR and first aid, and fire investigations.
The Mason Police Department, led by Chief Levi Wells, sponsors the academy alongside the Fire Department, led by Chief Bryan Brumagen, according to the city's website. The city said the program is meant to show residents how Mason prioritizes safety services for the community.
How to register
The program is free. It is open to Mason residents 18 and older, and registration is available through the Mason Community Center's WebTrac portal under activity number 413300.
The academy is separate from the Norms of Policing Safety Workshop, a one-session event on Thursday, Aug. 27, focused specifically on traffic-stop interactions.
No registration deadline or class capacity has been posted. Residents with questions can call the Mason Municipal Center at (513) 229-8500.
