Mason senior offensive lineman Andy Hutton picked up first-team All-Greater Miami Conference honors and was named a team captain for the 2026 football season, the program announced Wednesday, Aug. 19.
The recognition caps a breakout junior year for Hutton, who helped anchor a Comets offensive line that powered Mason to a 5-6 record and a playoff berth in 2025. He and fellow lineman Joey Corcoran were also named GMC Athletes of the Year in May, a separate honor that also recognized the Mason track team's conference title.
He'll wear the captain's "C" this fall.
Hutton returns alongside Corcoran to give head coach Brian Castner one of the conference's most experienced offensive fronts. The Cincinnati Enquirer's GMC preview called the pair "all-league offensive linemen" and listed running back Brandon Birdsong, quarterback Alex Nagel and punter Orion Bentley among the key returners.
Senior wide receiver Taurien Wiggins credited that line in a September 2025 MHS Chronicle article after a conference win over Oak Hills: "I am very confident every game knowing that even if I don't perform, my offense is going to show up."
Simmons spotlighted on defense
The same Senior Spotlight series highlighted linebacker Cameron Simmons, a two-year defensive starter entering his final season. Mason Football posted Hutton's profile and Simmons' spotlight as part of a preseason rollout on its official account.
Simmons' presence gives the Comets continuity on both sides of the ball. On defense, he joins returning starters Dave Hutton, Jake Koelling and AJ Kaylor.
Breaking through in 2026
Mason's 2025 campaign ended with a 46-41 first-round playoff loss to Fairfield, the second straight early exit for the program. The Comets started 3-1 in league play before a three-game skid, then rallied late to qualify.
Castner told the MHS Chronicle in September 2025 that the team needed to clean up mistakes but believed in its fight: "I feel like this team is going to keep fighting, but we have to get a lot better."
With a decorated senior class led by Hutton's captaincy, Mason enters 2026 aiming to snap that streak of first-round exits.
