Mason shooting suspect told court 'I would like to be in prison for life'

A 27-year-old Mason man charged with shooting his mother multiple times and killing her two dogs told a magistrate he wanted to spend the rest of his life behind bars, according to details that emerged during his video arraignment Tuesday, Aug. 18.

Jarret Buttrey faces felonious assault and causing harm to an animal charges after the Monday, Aug. 17 shooting at a home in the 1400 block of Windward Drive, off Butler Warren Road. Warren County Municipal Court set his bond at $300,000 cash-only.

During the hearing, prosecutors disclosed that Buttrey has a history of mental illness and no prior criminal record, according to WLWT. His mother told a 911 dispatcher that Buttrey has Asperger's syndrome but stopped taking his medication as an adult. She said she had let him move back into her home about a month before the shooting, despite warnings from others that it was dangerous.

His mother told the dispatcher she knew the risk but said he was her child and she couldn't turn him away.

Buttrey appeared visibly distressed during the video arraignment, sitting with his hand covering his face for much of the proceeding. When the magistrate asked prosecutors if there was anything they wanted her to know, Buttrey interjected: "I would like to be in prison for life." Asked whether he had anywhere to go if he posted bond, he said the jail was fine.

The shooting on Windward Drive

Mason Police Chief Levi Wells said officers responded to a domestic violence call at the Windward Drive residence around 7:30 p.m. Aug. 17, according to Fox 19. While en route, they learned a woman had been shot.

Buttrey's mother called 911 first, telling the dispatcher her son was having "a meltdown, a big one," that he had attacked her dog and was slamming things against the walls. The call disconnected before she could describe the shooting.

Buttrey then called 911 himself, telling the dispatcher to send an ambulance and that he had done something horrible. He stayed on the line for approximately 45 minutes, even after officers arrived at the scene.

Warren County Municipal Court documents state Buttrey shot his mother four or five times with a .40 caliber semi-automatic handgun, causing serious physical harm, according to WCPO. He also shot and killed two of her dogs.

Officers removed the victim from the home and transported her to UC West Chester Hospital, where she was expected to undergo surgery. Her current condition has not been publicly disclosed.

Buttrey barricaded himself inside a room after the shooting. The Warren County Tactical Response Team negotiated with him before he eventually walked out on his own and was taken into custody without further incident. He was booked into the Warren County Jail at 11:21 p.m.
